Spiritual Meaning of the Vulture

Our Guide for the 2026 5/5 Portal is the VULTURE.
My first encounter with this spirit animal happened about a year ago when I was outside in my yard with the two pugs. I saw two large birds overhead, and they began circling around my oldest pug, who, at the time, was going through some serious health stuff.
My stomach sank as I felt this was a sign of her impending doom.
And sure enough, she did die not long after that.
Even after she died, I continued to see them. I also started pulling cards with vultures on them and began to dive into their spiritual significance more as a period of severe transformation, death and rebirth was happening in my life.
The energy around us right now feels vaguely similar, and when I started pulling cards for it, I was not really surprised but kind of rolled my eyes and went of course… when the vulture cards started showing up.
Vultures often carry a heavy reputation due to its association with death, but in spiritual and metaphysical traditions, its meaning is profoundly positive, focusing on purification, rebirth, and efficiency.
Let's break it down a bit…
Death & Rebirth
The vulture is a powerful symbol of the cycle of life. Because it consumes what is already dead, it performs the essential task of transforming waste into life-giving energy. Spiritually, this represents transmutation, the ability to take a dead situation or something or other, or negative energy and turn it into something useful. It also goes along nicely with new beginnings, but in order for new beginnings to take place, a cycle needs to end before a new one can start.
Purification & Protection
Vultures have incredibly strong immune systems, allowing them to handle toxins that would kill other animals. This makes them the perfect symbols of energetic cleansing. Vultures are reminders to clear out stagnant energy or the rot in your life, to trust in your own ability to navigate negativity or to ask for help, and they are also big emphasizers on spiritual hygiene and protection.
Resourcefulness & Patience
They are masters of the sky and their craft of flying. They do not need to flap their wings that often; they are able to glide for hours without much effort, which shows that maximum results can be had with minimal effort. This tells me that we are being asked to take care of our energy and look for the leaks. We are being encouraged to conserve our energy and to stop struggling against the winds and ride the currents that life is presenting at this time. As with most big birds in the sky, they also ask us to keep that big vision in mind and also to look at things with a higher perspective right now. IF you are hyper-focusing on something, it's only going to frustrate you and piss you off right now.
Alchemy & Transformation
The vulture is often linked to the Nigredo stage of alchemy. This is a 100% necessary stage of decay before the gold can be found. It NEEDS to happen, and it needs to process. This can take time.
So what does this all mean?
I believe the 5/5 energy is asking us to let go. A new cycle is beginning, and the vulture is overseeing this transformation within all of us. Things are probably seeming really bad right now, and we might even be in a stage where we do not know how to get out of this or how to make it better. The vulture assures that we can take a bad situation and turn it good. There is an opportunity there, but we may need to take a big big step back to see it rather than hyper-focusing on the issues at hand.
The vulture can also ask us to let go of the past. Many of us are carrying something dead around with us. Dead energetic weight.
Stop carrying that carcass with you.
Let it go, give it back to the Earth.
Trust that you have the tools to transform your current challenges into gold.
