Spiritual Meaning of The Hyena

And what it will be bringing forward for us in September 2026.

The Hyena is an ancient archetype of resourcefulness, radical community, shadow integration, and sacred alchemy.

So what does this mean for us as a collective?

It is certainly showing through as a potent medicine.

Though the Hyena does catch a lot of negative hype in mainstream folklore, it is not showing through in this reading to cause distress; rather, it has arrived as a master teacher of resilience, truth-telling, and radical adaptability.

I get this impression of many of us turning life's “scraps” into gold.

Hyenas are famous for their roles as scavengers, but spiritually, this represents one of the highest forms of alchemy… NOTHING IS WASTED.

Their powerful jaws allow them to digest parts of life that other animals abandon.

September may be asking us to revisit what was cast aside earlier in the year. We may be drawn back to unfinished ideas, broken plans, or seemingly dead ends or dead-end situations that do now hold some sort of vitality for us.

I think one of the hardest things of this month will be learning not to mourn what didn’t work out so far this year, but maybe for us to look a little bit closer, as there might be some nutrient-rich wisdom hidden in the marrow of the past setbacks.

Another strength of the Hyena is their “laugh”. Sound holds vibrations, and we are all affected by vibrations. Sound is used as an energetic tool in some cases. In shadow work, humour and levity act as powerful shields against despair and absurdity.

For the collective, this may bring a wave of shadow integration. We are being asked to face the parts of ourselves or society that feel uncomfortable, misunderstood, or even untamed.

One thing to keep in mind for this part is that laughter releases the grip of control. When faced with rigid expectations, bureaucratic chaos, or old insecurities… meet them with a sense of cosmic humour.

Laughter can break the trance of helplessness.

In nature, Hyenas are actually matriarchal, highly organized, and fiercely loyal. They survive through absolute solidarity and clear social intelligence, knowing who has their back when darkness falls.

This makes me think that hyper-individualism is wearing thin. September asks us to call and gather our real soul tribe. This is less about performance or popularity and more about authentic, practical community support.

We may be faced with challenges this month where we need to know and figure out who is actually in our pack. Lean into allies and state our needs clearly, and stop trying to carry every heavy load alone.

We are also more than likely going to see ourselves dismantle false narratives of who holds real power. September encourages us to stop waiting for permission or validation from outdated systems.

But in order to do this, we need to trust our gut, bypass unnecessary gatekeepers, and forge our path through strategic ingenuity.

This transition in the season coming up might feel really overwhelming, so what do we ask ourselves through this chaos?

Where am I giving away my power to be accepted, rather than being loyal to my true pack?

What past failure or abandoned project contains energy I can repurpose today?

How can I use humour and adaptability to lighten a heavy situation?

The bottom line with September and our Hyena friend is not about polite aesthetics; it is about fierce survival, instinctual intelligence, and joyous resilience.

Embrace your wild…

Reclaim your power…

And trust the strength of your clan.
